Library of Michigan & Historical Centre
The Library of Michigan promotes, advocates and consistently works to
achieve the highest level of library service to the State of Michigan,
its government, its libraries and its residents.
Services include: current and historical Michigan books and materials;
state and federal government publications; state Law Library; one of
the 10 largest genealogy collections in the country; Service for the
Blind and Physically Handicapped, which reaches Michigan residents who
cannot use standard printed material; consultation, support and
information to librarians, library staff and trustees throughout the
state; demographic, economic and social data.
But now the State of Michigan Gov't wants to ship the 10th largest historical collection in the United States to other groups and/or organizations within the state. Time will tell as to where records will finally lay.
This is never easy for the thousands of Genealogists who come to these large collections at many facilities including the Ontario Archives or previously with the situation that the New York Genealogical society had.
The new recently opened Ontario Archives location with 20,000 more sq ft. than the old downtown location was a different situation. Funding was not an issue which is the case with the Michigan State Gov't. wanting to cut $2 million a year from it's budget.
Records will be displaced for sure in any case such as this one. Story
